US-BD Tech Investment Summit 2014 Kicks off
On 17 May, 2014 to further encourage and attract the US Investors & investment, Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) organizedUS Bangladesh Tech Investment Summit 2014 in Silicon Valley, Santa Clara, California, USA. The summit was organized at the TiEcon 2014-Silicon Valley which is the biggest and best entrepreneurial conference in the world where Over 4000 Senior Technology Professionals from 50+ Countries were present and a golden opportunity to participate, exchange perspectives, explore partnerships & discover business opportunities with over 120 of the most innovative companies from all over the world.
US Bangladesh Tech Investment Summit 2014 was a high level leadership meets where senior policy makers, technology entrepreneurs and industry leaders of Bangladesh met with the potential investors and business partners in USA. The objective of this event was to brand Bangladesh as the next Global IT destination, network with US entrepreneurs & investors and to attract investors and investment in IT. Around 200 participants including NRBs, IT entrepreneurs and IT professionals took part in the summit.
Sajeeb A Wazed, ICT Advisor to Hon’ble Prime Minister of Bangladesh delivered a keynote speech, Zunaid Ahmed Palak, Hon’ble State Minister, ICT Division, Ministry of Post, Telecommunication & Information Technology of Bangladesh, Shameem Ahsan, President, BASIS as session Chair, Dr. Khondoker Bazlul Hoque, Chairman, Agrani Bank, P K Agarwal, CEO, TiE Global, Russell T Ahmed, Secretary General, BASIS, Allen M. Chiu, Congressional Aid, U.S. Representative of Congressman Michael Honda, TiE Silicon Valley Representatives (Raj Desai) and Farhat Ali were present and attended as distinguished speakers and also delivered their words of speech at the US Bangladesh Tech Investment Summit.
Sajeeb A Wazed gave a presentation on “Bangladesh ICT Industry overview”. He also said, The ‘Digital Bangladesh’ initiative of the present government has increased the export revenues in this sector from US $ 24 million to US $200 million in the last five years since 2007 and We believe that in the next five years the export revenues will surpass the targeted US $ 1 billion and also this initiative is helping set up infrastructure for enhanced connectivity, ICT based citizen service delivery and ICT based Education system, redundant internet connectivity. Internet connectivity has been enhanced vastly over the country.
Mr. Zunaid Ahmed Palak, Hon’ble State Minister said “Government of Bangladesh has identified ICT as a key pillar and enabler for the country’s socio-economic transformation and development.”
BASIS President said “the aim of this Summit is to further strengthen the bilateral economic & technological ties and policy advocacy between US and Bangladesh” co-partners of this summit

Govt Plans To Set Up Cyber Security Department
The government plans to set up a separate ‘Cyber Security Department’ to deal with the fast growing cyber crimes that have emerged as a threat to the national security and financial services. The cyber security department will have a Computer Response Incident Team (CRIT) which will work as a trouble shooter to address the computer related cyber crime incidents.
The ICT Division is making a proposal relating to establishment of a ‘Cyber Crimes Department’ for submitting it to the relevant authorities. The existing ICT Act, 2013 will also be amended taking opinions from lawyers, judges, police, journalists and victims to make the law suiting to the needs of the time.
A massive awareness programme will supplement the legal measures. The programme titled ‘National Level Cyber Security and Enhancing Awareness on ICT Act,’ formally inaugurated on May 10, will organize seminars, meetings and road shows in 64 districts and 128 colleges and 73 universities to create awareness among the computer and internet users about cyber crimes and ICT Act.

Microsoft Unveils New Surface Pro 3 Tablet
Microsoft is ready for its third crack at the tablet market. The company today unveiled the Surface Pro 3, its thinnest, lightest and largest device in the line yet.
Billed as “the tablet that can replace your laptop,” the Surface Pro 3 furthers Microsoft’s goal of creating a device that offers the productivity benefits of a PC with the portability and comfort of an iPad. The Pro 3 boasts a 12-inch screen, 1.4 inches larger than the Surface Pro 2’s and 1.3 inches smaller than the size of the smaller MacBook Pro. The device is also lighter than the previous Surface Pro at 1.76 pounds and thinner at 0.36 inches.
The Surface Pro 3 goes up for pre-order on Wednesday, starting at $799 with an Intel Core i3 processor, 64 GB of memory and 4 GB of RAM. Higher-performing models are priced at $999, $1,299, $1,549 and $1,949. The keyboard cover, which gives the device its laptop-like functionality, costs $129.99
